Why You Should Always Keep a Spare Browser Handy

When we browse the Web on our computers and mobile devices, we do so through a type of software application known as a Web browser. A Web browser acts as the window through which we can view most of the information on the Internet. Five of the most popular browsers today are: Chrome (Google), Firefox (Mozilla), Internet Explorer (Microsoft), Safari (Apple), and Opera (Opera Software).

New on Exhibit - Hurricane Season

Hurricane season on the east coast started on June 1st.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) is predicting an active year, but Rhode Islanders have weathered the storms before.

Summer days, summer nights, summer READING...

Summer Reading. Does any term conjure up more pleasant images?  Soft breezes, iced tea (or perhaps a Long Island iced tea) by your side, a cool, comfortable spot and a great read ahead of you. We even have a name for such reads -– “beach reads,” as though that were the only place for them.  Personally, all that sand and sun –- reading is the last thing on my mind at the beach as I slowly rotisserie myself –- but that’s me. But on my porch?  Heaven!

Fifty years ago in London the International Printing Machinery and Allied Trades Exhibition included an ambitious exhibition on the influence that the invention of the printing press had on the 500 years of human history that followed. The exhibition was called "Printing and the Mind of Man," and it was followed by a 1967 catalog that listed hundreds of books (and some ephemera) crucial to the history of the western world.

Eating like a Local: Clam Chowder and Clam Cakes

Full disclosure readers - I'm not a Rhode Island native.  I grew up on the south shore of Massachusetts.  Despite many day trips to Providence and Rhode Island beaches during my youth and the fact that I have made Rhode Island my recent home, I have much to learn about the local culture and traditions.   And so I'll be sharing with you my adventures as I explore the state and will tie it all back in with our Rhode Island Collection materials.
