Matt Faust 2009, Category: All Films

Red Terror on the Amber Coast
Ken Gumbert 2009, Category: Documentary
Run time: 55 min. | Lithuania

Red Terror documents the extreme measures used by the Soviets to occupy and subdue the Baltic States during and following WWII. It also honors the dissidents, namely the Lithuanian "Forest Brethren," who bravely resisted and inspired future generations. While their stories are largely unknown in the West, these young men and women fought against the mass deportation of their people to the Gulag, imprisonment, torture, show trials, and the use of psychiatric medical practices to 'cure' resisters. In this film, many elderly soldiers speak to Western audiences for the first time. Rare and archival moving footage and still photos from KGB archives and personal collections help illustrate this poignant story of survival and eventual political triumph.

Team Taliban

Benjamin Kegan 2008, Category: Documentary
Run time: 12 min. | USA

Adeel Alam, like many young boys in America, grew up watching pro-wrestling on television. However, he went from doing flips on the living room couch at eight years old, to attending wrestling school at sixteen, and then wrestling in independent promotions throughout the Midwest before even graduating college. When Adeel took up the controversial character of a terrorist, "Mustafa Ali," wrestling as half of the "Team Taliban" duo, he incited immediate, passionate reactions from the crowd--the goal of any successful pro-wrestler. However, as a Muslim-American himself, Adeel has to contend with the images and stereotypes his character enacts. He certainly gets the audience's attention, but is the image he is placing in the spotlight the one he thinks the world should see? Going beyond the question of right or wrong, Team Taliban ponders the infinitely more complicated effects of such a performance. The distance between the obvious caricature of a cultural stereotype and that stereotype itself is one that can shift quickly and without warning. Team Taliban asks how the four corners of a wrestling ring can change the way we view The War on Terror.

The People v. Leo Frank
Ben Loeterman 2009, Category: Jewish Films
Run time: 86 min. | USA

In the pre-dawn hours of April 27, 1913, the night watchman at an Atlanta pencil factory made a grisly discovery. The body of a young girl had been beaten, strangled, and covered in soot. The death of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a white worker at the factory, quickly became front-page news. Several arrests were made, including Jim Conley, a black janitor who was seen three days later washing red stains out of his work shirt, and a Jewish man raised in Brooklyn, Leo Frank, the factory's superintendent, who was also the last person to admit seeing Mary alive. The People v. Leo Frank weaves together well-crafted drama with first-person recollections, commentary, and a rich trove of historical images. Filmed entirely in Georgia during the summer of 2008, the film attracted significant talent, such as Will Janowitz (of the Sopranos) who plays Leo Frank opposite Seth Gilliam (of The Wire) as Jim Conley, the State's star witness against Frank during his trial. All dialogue in is taken directly from the historical record.
