Author Marilyn Johnson* presents This Book is Overdue! How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All
About the Book and Author
In This Book is Overdue! How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All (a BookPage Notable Title), Marilyn Johnson asks and answers: What is it like to be a librarian in a world of too much information? Constant change, exploding technology, shrinking budgets, growing numbers of the baffled -- could there be a better spot than behind the librarians -- desk to watch the digital age unfold? Are librarians still necessary in the age of Google?
Johnson chased dozens of tech-savvy librarians who are wrestling the accumulated history and culture of the world in a variety of mutating formats while serving needy, techno-stressed patrons -- us. These librarians are leaning into the digital age while they hold firmly to old-fashioned librarian values like privacy, accuracy, open access, and free speech. Irrelevant? Hardly. In fact, we've never needed them more.
Marilyn Johnson is the author of two books: This Book Is Overdue! and The Dead Beat, about the art of obituaries and obituary writers. The Dead Beat was chosen for the Borders Original Voice program and was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Discover Award. She is a former editor at Esquire and Outside magazines, and a former staff writer for Life. She and her family live in New York's Hudson Valley.
* While Johnson is not actually from New England, we think she's close enough to qualify! With this visit, she is also serving as the featured speaker at PPL's 2010 Annual Meeting. This event will double as a benefit for the Rhode Island Center for the Book at PPL. Tickets are $10 each.
Cost: $10 - This event is a fundraiser for RI Center for the Book at PPL
