Black History Month Special Event

A Narrated Concert:The Beauty of My Music: a musical journey from blues to gospel with Dr. Clarice Laverne Thompson, Founder & Artistic Director of RPM Voices of Rhode Island

Dr. Clarice Laverne Thompson will perform music of the African American folk tradition, focusing on traditional gospel songs, spirituals, and blues songs.

Clarice LaVerne Thompson, musicologist, founded RPM Voices of Rhode Island in 2003 with an active 65 plus singers. She also serves as minister of music and choir director at Bethel AME Church and gospel choir director at Beneficent Congregational Church both in Providence, Rhode Island. She has been a consultant for Providence Public School Department's Fine Arts program, and was resident Music Director at Rites and Reason Theatre for 8 years while serving as an adjunct professor at Brown University. She has directed at the National Black Theatre in New York, and numerous other theatres in New York, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi and international venues in Japan.

Dr. Thompson received her Master of Music in music composition and her Doctor of Arts in music history both from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.

This screening and discussion is part of the Black History Month Film Series, a collaboration of the Brown University Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice and the Providence Public Library.
