Don't Stop the Music Culminating Event

PPL's Creative Research Fellow Program with Micah Slakind

Micah Salkind, Providence Public Library’s first Creative Research Fellow has taken a close look at the Library’s collection of Civil War Ballads and their depiction of the visual culture of the time in the  border designs of the song sheets. As a demonstration, Micah will also perform different versions of the well-known ballad, “John Brown’s Body,” the unofficial abolitionist/Union anthem of the time, and different interpretations and lyrical settings that expand the ballad’s meaning.

Micah is a Providence-based DJ, sound designer, and a Ph.D. candidate in American Studies at Brown University. His scholarly work on Afro-Diasporic cultural production, which has included articles on South African popular music and global House dance culture, complements his work towards establishing innovative models for sustaining community art institutions and art-makers with local and state funders.
