A Fashion Primer and Tea with Madelyn Shaw

The BBC costume drama Downton Abbey is currently exploring life in the turbulent 1920s for the Grantham family, their social circle, and their servants. The show's costumers continue to use clothing to define character and illustrate the place in society that each character occupies.  How can we expect the art and cultural life of the 1920s to influence fashion sensibilities of our favorite characters?

Join cultural historian Madelyn Shaw for a look at where -- sartorially -- the Grantham family has been and where they are heading in season 5 and beyond.

Ms. Shaw is a well-respected museum curator and consultant, and has created exhibitions for the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the American Textile Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts. She has been affiliated with The Museum at F.I.T., NY and the RI School of Design.  In addition to her expertise on textiles of the Civil War era, she also lectures on textiles connected with the maritime trades, aviation, and the fashion industry.

Join us for tea following Ms. Shaw’s lecture.
Hats or attire from the era is encouraged!
