Making Skeletons Dance: Writing from Family Mythology & Folklore STUDIO

Go ahead—think of one you hear again and again. Some family anecdote about a botched road trip, an overturned table, grandma’s strange reaction to the garbage disposal, a phrase coined and repeated for twenty-odd years. Or think of something farther back. The great-great-aunt who was saintly but commit suicide, or who sold hooch during the Civil War, or the grandfather who, as a young boy, knocked over a pan of Jello during the Depression and never forgave himself. Which stories get repeated, and how many different versions exist?

In this course, we’ll read family myth-inspired texts, and produce lots of new work through writing exercises and experiments. The point of the course is not necessarily to only write about family, but to explore and play with the specific types of folktales that arise within them, the way certain details are used, the way these dramas sustain us, and inspire good storytelling in general. Some tale, tall or short. Terribly sad or very small. A big fish. A litany. It doesn’t need to be the deepest, darkest secret—the myths are what we say out loud. If we write them well enough, they’ll illuminate the depths. What are myths anyway, but living metaphors of a larger story?

Studios are geared towards drafting new work. The pieces you’ll be drafting will be about, or inspired by, select readings that the instructor will share with you. Come ready to read and discuss a little bit, and to write a lot.
