Providence Public Library's Early Literacy Learning Center presents a Read Aloud Workshop with Susan Marx, B.S.Ed., M.A. and Barbara Kasok, B.S.Ed., authors of Help me get ready to read -- The Practical Guide For Reading Aloud To Children During Their First Five Years.

Read Aloud Workshops...are for ALL caring adults who read aloud to children from infancy through their preschool years. The Early Literacy Workshop is designed for parents and grandparents, daycare providers, preschool staff, early childhood professionals, volunteers in literacy programs, and librarians.

Workshop goal: 

To help you raise reading-ready children who love books and learning by demonstrating how to use parenting strategies and reading strategies to read aloud effectively to young children.

The interactive workshop agenda includes:

  • Research on the importance of reading aloud to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers

  • Information about early literacy concepts and skills

  • Parenting strategies to use that foster children’s self-esteem

  • Reading strategies to use to introduce early literacy concepts and skills

  • Criteria for selecting good children’s picture books

  • Recommended books to read aloud to young children

About the Presenters

Susan Marx, B.S.Ed, M.A. is a parent educator, writer and editor of educational material for students and teachers, and elementary classroom teacher. She has led over 600 positive parenting workshops for diverse groups of parents and professionals on a range of topics including creating home-school partnerships, helping children succeed in school, understanding children’s temperament, and getting children ready for kindergarten. As a writer and editor, she has prepared materials for reading, social studies, spelling, and language arts textbooks for major textbook publishers. She has three children and eight grandchildren who love having books read to them especially at bedtime.

Barbara Kasok, B.S.Ed. is a certified as a consulting teacher of reading in Massachusetts. She has taught in elementary school classrooms as well as in federally funded Title I reading programs (K-4). As a project manager, she developed national reading programs and recommended appropriate books for teaching reading in grades K-8. She supervised editorial teams working on developing, writing, and editing manuscript for K-8 reading, language arts, and social studies materials for national publishers. Materials included reading lessons for teachers, reading practice books for children, decodable storybooks for beginning readers, and rhyme and poem books. She has three children and two grandchildren who love to find new books to read in my book basket.
