From Seed to the Table - Beginning URI Master Gardening On Ramp

In this multi-session series, learn through information and hands-on experience just what it takes to be a “master gardener.” Register for the entire series.

March 18 -- Garden Design & Soil

10 – 11:30 am at Providence Public Library, Meeting Room

We’ll talk about the size and placement of the garden, as well as soil composition.  Bring a sample of your soil to this first gathering! Make your garden plan from a list of plants and a map of your space. Hands-on kit (and quick demo): onion seeds, start at home; peat pots, pot soil, instructions.  If you have a garden space in mind for the spring, draw a map of it and bring it along. (Advance: Soil sampling instructions, map instructions, any intro material/directions)

April 15 -- Early Planting, including Square Foot Gardening

10 – 11:30 am at Providence Public Library, Meeting Room

Which plants?  How many?  What to plant early?  What to plant on May 20? Master Gardeners will share their expertise and years of experience!

April 22 -- In the Garden: Healthy Soil & Early Planting

10 am – 12 pm at the Community Garden, Roger Williams Park

Join in the group effort to prepare our PPL plot for early planting–learn about composting and soil preparation in this session.

May 20 -– Planting Field Session

10 am – 12 pm at the Community Garden, Roger Williams Park

With help from URI Master Gardeners Charlie Junod and Bill Hadderly, the crops go in!  Tomatoes, peppers, cukes, etc.

June 17 -- Caring for the Garden

10 – 11:30 am at Providence Public Library, Meeting Room

July 22 -- Caring for the garden on site

10 am - 12 pm at the Community Garden, Roger Williams Park     

August 19 -- Harvesting and Pest Control

10 am – 12 pm at the Community Garden, Roger Williams Park

First fruits of the hard work and identification  of garden pests; what goes into putting the garden to bed for the year (we’ll be looking for volunteers to help with this activity in October.)

October 14 -- Completing the gardening season

Putting the garden to bed and reviewing the course.
