The Voting Rights Act at 50: The Promise and The Struggle

On August 6, 1965, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law. As one of the defining accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement, the law protected the fundamental voting rights of all. But, 50 years later, hurdles to the ballot box still remain and new threats of disenfranchisement are appearing.

Join the ACLU of RI, the NAACP-Providence Branch, and Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless to discuss this landmark legislation, the current state of voting rights here in Rhode Island and across the nation, and what we can do to ensure everyone’s vote is counted.
