Providence Public Library Announces 2009 Summer Reading Program
BE CREATIVE @ the Library -- June 29 - August 18
Providence Public Library (PPL) announces the 2009 Summer Reading Program, set to kick off beginning June 29 with sign-ups at neighborhood libraries and activities and events through August 18. Themed BE CREATIVE @ the Library, this year’s city-wide Summer Reading Program is sponsored by Providence Public Library, along with the Rhode Island Office of Library & Information Services, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and McDonald’s Local Owner/Operators of Rhode Island, the Pawtucket Red Sox, Citizens Bank, and Rhode Island’s Children’s Librarians. Special programs as various Providence neighborhood libraries have been sponsored by library Friends Groups. Summer Reading Programs in Providence
There are special and regular programs and events planned throughout the summer at the City’s branch libraries. Children are encouraged to sign up at their respective library branches during the week of June 29 – July 3. Participants in activities and events can WIN PRIZES AND FREE PASSES TO THE ZOO AND MUSEUMS! Parents are encouraged to check with individual libraries for complete schedule of daily activities.
2009 Summer Reading Booklists Online
In addition to daily and special events, PPL has once again collaborated with the Providence School Department to produce age-specific summer reading booklists for children in grades K – 12. In addition to being available at libraries, these lists can be viewed online and printed; books can be instantly reserved by going to the Library’s Web site: www.provlib.org and clicking on the Summer Reading link.

FREE Harry Potter Film Festival at Central Library
Re-read the books and catch up with Harry Potter on the big screen before the sequel is released on July 15! The festival will conclude in time for the next Potter film - Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince, coming to theaters July 15. Festival-goers may also enter in person for a chance to win a Harry Potter Box Set—Books 1-7!
Note: Parents/guardians should determine which movies are age-appropriate for their children.

Summer Reading Program: Keith Munslow

Keith’s quick wit, musical chops and improv skills delight children and adults alike! This one-of-a-kind show celebrates the imagination and all things creative.

Summer Reading Program: Napua O' Polynesia

Napua O Polynesia will take you to the islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand and the Marquesas in song and dance. We will be using authentic implements such as drums, gourds, bamboo sticks etc.Also occasionally we will feature authentic grass skirts! Our performance is educational as well as entertaining! There will be lots of audience participation/interaction.

Summer Reading Program: The Great Baldini

Come see The Great Baldini in his 2009 show: “Always Be Creative.” Audiences of all ages will be magically motivated to tap into their creative genes. Throughout the show, participants will use their magical powers and chant the magic word “cre a tiv i ty” to make objects appear and disappear. This is an audience participation show which will surely entertain the inner child in all of us.
