The Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI) Announces Free English Language,
Citizenship Preparation and Computer Classes Offered Statewide
en español
The five libraries that comprise the Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI) invite Rhode Island families seeking English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship preparation or computer classes to register for free classes to be offered at the Cranston, East Providence, Pawtucket, Providence and West Warwick libraries during the next year. Most classes start the second week of September.
Beginning and Intermediate level English learners can develop their reading, writing and conversation skills with the instruction of professional teachers. Childcare for children ages 3 to 10 is offered at most classes. New this year, learners can choose a “Workplace Communications” course or a four-morning-a- week ESL program. Learners can also enroll in a “Computer Class for RIFLI Learners” or a “Book Discussion for ESL Learners.” RIFLI classes are conveniently scheduled in the mornings, evenings or Saturday and generally meet twice a week, in two-hour sessions.
The mission of the public libraries united in RIFLI is to provide learner-centered literacy programming for Rhode Island families to improve their limited English language skills in a library setting and link them to community services. RIFLI values and builds upon the diverse cultures of participating families and seeks to establish a positive basis for continued growth. Call (401) 455-8041 to arrange an appointment for registration or for more information or en Español llame' 455-8041. Visit RIFLI.
Major funding for RIFLI is from the R. I. Department of Education, the partner libraries, the City of Pawtucket Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from U.S. HUD, Federal LSTA funding through the R. I. Office of Library & Information Services and the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. RIFLI is a 2007 Eastern Regional Winner of the Verizon/National Center for Family Literacy Tech Savvy Award and has been identified as a Promising Practice by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation.
