Discovery Guides Join Staff

In March, the RI Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI) based at PPL got word from Better World Books and the National Center for Family Literacy that the Library earned one of three national Librarians and Families awards of $10,000 to implement an innovative new program that would enable some students in the RIFLI adult ESL program to become Discover Guides in our new Chace Children's Discovery Library.

Accepting the award, RIFLI literacy program coordinator Karisa Tashjian said, "In addition to providing valuable work experience to our adult learners, this grant will help us promote a love of reading in young children and give immigrant parents the tools they need to help their children become successful readers and learners."

With our four new Discovery Guides, PPL's staff language skills have expanded three-fold; they speak Spanish, Chinese and Korean and will help us achieve varied outreach goals both in the Chace Children's Discovery Library -- greeting and assisting immigrant families -- as well as aiding with necessary outreach to our varied immigrant communities.

Join us in welcoming (l-r) Tina Fang, a native of China; Eubalda Coates, a native of Guatemala; Yesicca Cranshaw, a native of Colombia; and Myungsook Ji, a native of Korea.
