Providence Public Library Announces Summer Reading Programs & Performances, Book Lists & More!

Providence Schools and PPL Librarian Reading Lists Available Online

Providence Public Library (PPL) is pleased to announce its 2014 Summer Reading Program schedule of programs and activities beginning with a kick-off celebration featuring the Hampstead Theatre Company on Saturday, June 28 at 11 am, in PPL’s Auditorium (3rd floor), 150 Empire Street, Providence.  This year’s theme is Fizz, Boom, Read!  See complete performance schedule and details below.   Beginning July 10 and running through August 7, families are also invited to take part in weekly Thursday Adventure Nights (stories, crafts, activities and snacks based on five science themes) from 6:30 - 7:30 PM.  In addition, this year’s activities include Summer Family Film Event on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 am in the Library’s 3rd Floor Meeting Room (How to Eat Fried Worms).  Summer Reading activities conclude with an End of Summer Party on Thursday, August 7.

Saturday, June 28 — 11:00 AM in Auditorium, 3rd Floor

Hampstead Theatre Company (Children & Teens)

Lewis Carroll’s immortal classic is a wonderful tale of a young girl whose boredom takes her on a journey of imagination. Through this story, Hampstead Theater Company hopes to encourage children to enjoy using their imagination and triumph over their fears while finding magical tings right in their own backyard.

Mad Science (Children)

Mad Science is on a mission to spark the imagination and curiosity of children and to show them that science happens every day all around them.

Sparky’s Puppet Theater (Children)

Join us as we travel through time with our scientist companion.  He has built a time machine and set the dial for the future...or is the past? Adventure awaits in this delightful puppet presentation.

Farm Fresh RI (All Ages)

Farm Fresh RI will be presenting about choosing and making healthy snacks from local ingredients. There will also be a chance to explore your food in new and exciting ways.

Join us as we explore the bounty of Rhode Island.


Saturday, August 2 — 1:00 PM, 3rd Floor Meeting Room

Make Your Own Video Game (Teens)

RI Computer Museum will provide participants with a great chance to put down you controllers and use “Scratch,” an interactive software program to create your own “video game” sample. This workshop aims to explain how early video games were made and give participants new skills to develop their own games.

SUMMER READING WRAP-UP PARTY!  Stand Out with Scott (Children and Teens)

Benjamin Franklin was a lover of books and a lifelong learner whose work in science positively impacted countless numbers of people! In this high energy presentation, Scott introduces Dr. Franklin’s work and encourages audiences to identify and solve everyday problems to improve our world today.
