Providence Public Library to Reopen Sundays, October 19

The Library’s Sunday Hours are 1 – 5 pm, October 19 – May 10

Providence Public Library (PPL) will celebrate its official fall re-opening on Sundays (1 – 5 pm) on Sunday, October 19.  To kick off the 2014-15 program year, the Library invites members of the public to can take in the ongoing exhibition in the Providence Journal Rhode Island Room (First Floor): Protecting Providence -- 3 Centuries of Policing in Rhode Island’s Capital.  The exhibit (which also includes items of note in cases on the Third Floor), runs through October 30.  In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Providence Police department, it features items from the turn of the 20th century to the present day.  

Fans of Edgar Allan Poe are invited to take in Carl L. Johnson presents: An Hour In Providence With Edgar Allan Poe! from 2 – 3 pm in PPL’s Auditorium (3rd floor).  The tribute will include dramatic readings/recitations of Mr. Poe’s prose and poetry; plus several songs will be offered.  There will also be a touch of audience participation!

The Library will also kick off its annual Writers’ Series with The Art of Column Writing, with Suzette Standring from 2:00 – 4:00 pm in its Meeting Room (3rd Floor). With the explosion of blogs and websites, everyone is a columnist with an opinion, skill, or story to be shared.  Discover tips and techniques used by award-winning newspaper columnists. Based on the book, The Art of Column Writing: Insider Secrets from Art Buchwald, Dave Barry, Arianna Huffington, Pete Hamill and Other Great Columnists by Suzette Martinez Standring. 

Children and families are also welcome in the Chace Children’s Discovery Library (Ground Level), where families who choose to join the Friends of the Children’s Library will receive introductory offers, including a free book bag!
