RI Institute for Labor Studies and Research Adult Literacy Program Coordinators attend closing institute of the Networks for Integrating New Americans Initiative at the Dept of Education in Washington, DC

Brady Dunklee and Sophie Tan, Rhode Island Institute for Labor Studies and Research (RI ILSR) Adult Literacy Program Coordinators, along with Karisa Tashjian, Director of the RI Family Literacy Initiative and Providence Public Library Adult Literacy Services, traveled to Washington, DC, October 30 to participate in the closing institute of the Networks for Integrating New Americans Initiative at the Department of Education.  As part of the program, coordinators of local networks and leadership from World Education and its partners of the national Network for Integrating New Americans met with members of the White House Domestic Policy Council and other federal partners to provide a briefing on the status of the networks’ immigrant integration efforts and to discuss relevant federal programs. 

Attendees for the briefing included members of the White House Domestic Policy Council, representatives from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and representatives from the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (Department of Education), the Office of English Language Acquisition (Department of Education), the Department of Labor, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

The RI ILSR is a founding member of WeRIN (the We RI Network), a network of three Rhode Island adult education agencies serving adult English Language Learners in the greater Providence area.  Other WeRIN members are the Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI), based at Providence Public Library, and English For Action.  In April, 2014, WeRIN was one of five networks chosen nationally by the US Department of Education for participation in its Networks for Integrating New Americans Initiative.
