Verizon Supports Library’s Workforce Technology Training Programs with $5,000 Grant
Providence Public Library received a $5,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation in support of the Library’s ongoing business and workforce technology training programs. Each year, approximately 1,500 people participate in more than 240 free technology and computer training classes offered at Providence Public Library. The classes are a primary way the Library provides important business/job readiness support and technology skills training to all Rhode Islanders. The free classes are offered regularly throughout the year to all, regardless of their level of knowledge or experience, whether for professional application or personal productivity.
“Today, literacy and learning take on new meaning as broadband and the Internet offer us the ability to access unlimited amounts of information. We are proud to partner with the Providence Public Library in a program that reaches out to every type of learner across their lifespan. At the Verizon Foundation, we believe in giving people endless opportunities for learning and this program aids the people in the community in that journey,” said Michele Cinquegrano, Regional Director, Verizon External Affairs.
“We greatly appreciate Verizon’s continued support for the important and popular free technology learning programs we offer. During these challenging economic times, especially, when more and more people turn to the Library for help in developing necessary job skills, we strive to continue providing these valuable services,” said Library Director Dale Thompson.
Learners choose from a wide array of classes, including all levels and programs in Microsoft Office products, as well as a variety of other software/applications, tools, and subjects. “The computer classes at Providence Public Library have been very valuable to me and my family. The courses in Excel have helped me to assist my husband in his business and have been a springboard for more learning,” said computer class participant L. Milner of Cranston.
