Early Literacy Learning Center

Laying the foundation for learning and reading

The Library’s Early Literacy Learning services and programs support the foundation of pre-reading and language enrichment skills so crucial to the young child’s cognitive and social development. Our professional librarians and early childhood educators work with parents, educators and caregivers throughout the state to provide the collections, resources and support they need to assist these young minds in being ready to read, and most importantly, in beginning their lifelong habit of reading for pleasure and knowledge.

Premiere Children’s Collection: 60,000+ items
Our juvenile collections are the largest in the state, selected by professional librarians for both quality and appeal.

Learning Classes/Programs: for ages birth to 5 and their parent/educators

Programs and classes are the cornerstone of our EarlyLiteracy services. Our core early childhood classes include Cradle to Crayons, an ongoing eight-week series for children ages 1 to 3 and their parent or caregiver, Lapsit Story Times (birth to 18 months), and Preschool Storytimes (3 – 5 years). Workshops for parents and educators are also offered throughout the year. Our Family Learning Sundays is a monthly program where we invite families of children ages 5 to 8 into the Library for varied interactive learning experiences.

LARKs: Learning and Reading Kits

Based on best practices for daycare providers and educators, LARKs bring quality literature to our state’s youngest residents. With more than 160 different themes, and a selection available in Spanish as well as English, LARK kits contain books, activity guides, music cassettes, worksheets, games, toys or puppets, and a bibliography list. Any Rhode Island child care agency, family child care home, preschool, or kindergarten teacher may borrow the kits.
