LARK Kits (Learning And Reading Kits)

Complete list of LARK Kits

The Providence Public Library has created 160 Learning and Reading Kits (LARKs) for preschool child care providers and educators. LARKs are thematic kits of early childhood library materials packaged in a plastic tub or tote bag. Each kit is bursting with 10-12 children's books, music or video, visual aides like puppets and flannel boards, and a wealth of hands-on fun -- games, puzzles, toys, costumes, posters and much more! An activity folder in each kit offers you a choice of activities/ideas, helping you to effectively teach thematic curriculum units in a developmentally appropriate way.

There are LARKs about nature, special times of the year, concepts, special talents, "all about me," families, community, stories and our world. There are even LARKs especially for toddlers. The LARK program also has tabletop puppet stages and finger puppet stages available to borrow. LARKS may be checked out free from and returned to Providence Public Library.

Borrowing LARK Kits

LARKs are available for circulation to child care providers and educators from any licensed child care agency or family child care home in Rhode Island. LARKs are also highly recommended for kindergarten and first grade teachers. We also have kits designed for toddlers and bilingual kits for preschoolers in Spanish/English.

To borrow a LARK you must apply for a Providence Public Library teacher card or agency card.

Teacher Card

Teacher cards are for teachers working at child care agencies or schools in Rhode Island. Bring a personal ID and verification of your current employment (i.e., statement on agency/school letterhead signed by the director/principal) to the Providence Public Library to apply for your card.

Agency Card

Agency cards are for family child care home providers. Bring a personal ID and a copy of your family child care home certification to the Providence Public Library to apply for your card. Agency cards are also available for child care, social service and community agencies.

LARKs may only be checked out from and returned to a library branch located in Providence.  They circulate for 2 weeks.
