Order of Payment

Order of Payment

Draft of payment ordered to Timothy Phelps, by Richard Arnold.  (1792)

The address listed is that of General Benedict Arnold (father of Richard) in London.

Benedict Arnold was an American general during the American Revolutionary War, who fought for the Continental Army.  He captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775 and obtained command of the fort at West Point.  This latter success proved his downfall, as he planned to surrender West Point to the British.  His plan was exposed in 1780, and Arnold switched sides, fighting as a brigadier general for the British Army.  After the American victory, Arnold moved to London, where he died in 1801.
