Bill of Sale of a Negro Man

      Bill of sale of a Negro man named Harry, signed by Joseph Backus. (1729)

                                                                          

 “Whereas I, Joseph Backus of Hartford, Sheriff of the County of Hartford did in pursuance of my said office by virtue of one execution, dated the 15th day of September, 1729 (being an execution granted upon a judgment of court recovered by John Road of Boston, against Samuel Allyn of Windsor of the sum of one hundred & forty one pounds one shilling and nine pence signed by Daniel Edwards clerk of the Superior Court)take towards satisfying of the same, one negro man named Harry which was avouched by P. Allyn to be his proper estate and recording as the law directs did upon the day of the date hereof expose the said negro to sale, and whereat Mr. Simon Chapman being the highest bidder at the vendue of said negro had the said negro knocked off to him for the sum of thirty pounds money which he said Chapman paid to me the said Sheriff.”
