Cathedral of St. John - burial ground -
The burial ground at St. John's Church in Providence dates from the early
18th century. The original church, called King's Chapel, was built in 1722. It
was replaced in 1810 by the present building, designed by John Holden Greene.
In addition tl containing the graves of many prominent Rhode Islanders, this
burial ground is famous as the spot Edgar Allan Poe chose to propose to Sarah
Helen Whitman in 1849.
St. John's became the cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.
