Originally known as the 14th Regiment Heavy Artillery, this African-American regiment was organized in Providence between August 28, 1863, and January 25, 1864. The designation of the Regiment changed to the 11th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery May 21, 1864. They saw action at Indian Village, Plaquemine on August 6, 1864 and served the Gulf area through October 1865 until being mustered out on October 2, 1865.
