The 2^nd Regiment Infantry was organized in Providence during June of 1861. The 2^nd Rhode Island left Providence for Washington, D.C. on June 19, 1861 where they remained until July 16. The 2^nd Rhode Island participated in the First Battle of Bull Run and guarded the defenses of Washington, D.C. The 2^nd Rhode Island also saw action at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, Chancellorsville and other major campaigns and battles.
