The Second Rhode Island Volunteers were organized in June, 1861. They left Providence for Washington, D.C., on June 19. They were attached to Burnside's Brigade, Hunter's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, to August, 1861 and remained in the Potomac area until July 1865.
