The Third Rhode Island was attached to Sherman's South Carolina Expeditionary Corps. They participated in an expedition to Port Royal, S.C., from October 28-November 7, 1861, the capture of Forts Walker and Beauregard, and saw action at Port Royal Harbor on November 7. 1861. Batteries B, C, E, F, H, and K saw action during the Battle of Secessionville on James Island, June 16, 1862.
