Rhode Island History

The materials in the Rhode Island Collection are by, for and about Rhode Island and its people. The collection consists of nearly 10,000 books; an image collection containing over 7,000 photographs of people, places and buildings available in print and online; historic and current maps pertaining to Rhode Island cities and towns; clippings; pamphlets; selected documents from the State of Rhode Island and the City of Providence. Our Rhode Island Index has been maintained since the early 1900s and offers access to the materials in this collection and a daily index to the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin for 1900-2004. The Library maintains a complete run of the Providence Journal on microfilm from 1829-present. Articles from the Providence Journal Archives online (1983-present) can be accessed from the Library or from home.

The Genealogy Collection features Providence city directories, house directories, family biographies, Arnold's Vital Records and regimental histories of the Civil War.
