pc 7185 House of Admiral Esek Hopkins First Commander In Chief of the Continental Navy 97 Admiral Street Grave and Monument of Esek Hopkins Hopkins Square and Charles Street and Branch Avenue The two story gamble roof portion of the house was built about 1755 It was the home of Esek Hopkins until his death in 1802 It was given to the City in 1907 by a descendent It is kept up and used by patriotic societies Esek Hopkins came from a family as ancient as the colony itself and as distinguished for learnig ability and public spirit He was born at Scituate RI on April 26th in 1718 Of his brothers there were three that were famous sea captains and another named Stephen Hopkins who was one of Americas greatest statesmen and a signer of the Declaration of Independence In the days before the Revolution RI led all the Colonies in commerce and privateering Esek Hopkins had the reputation of being the ablest and most enterprising and successful of all sea captains The monument marks the grave of Esek Hopkins in what was the Hopkins burial ground Providence RI postcard Collection Houses |
