When I moved to Providence, I didn’t know anyone and didn’t have a job. I’m an archivist, so I reached out to Kate Wells (Curator of PPL’s Rhode Island Collections) to learn about PPL and the archival collections in the city. I ended up asking her if I could volunteer with her while looking for a job.

Being unemployed can be depressing and isolating, but having PPL on my calendar twice a week has made the last 15 months so much easier and enjoyable. Not only does this add some structure to my life and get me out of the house, but I also get to have fun in archives and hang out with an intelligent, hilarious bunch of people.

I know the Special Collections staff is appreciative of my assistance, but really… it’s me who lucked out.
