Workshop

Welcome to Providence Public Library’s (PPL) Workshop. Our mission is to be a community space for creativity, collaboration, exploration, and innovation.

The Workshop is a multi-purpose educational space, specifically designed to support collaborative community-based and hands-on experiential learning for youth and adults of all ages. It serves as a hub for both formal and informal learning opportunities, the use of maker tools and technology, and sound recording, mixing, and audio production in our state of the art sound studio.

The Workshop also has a classroom and partner offices open to the community and other nonprofit organizations to hold meetings, interface with the public, and work collaboratively.

Open Studio Hours & Trainings

During Open Studio hours, the public is welcome to drop in to utilize the MakerSpace and learn how to use the tools and equipment through hands-on, experiential learning. The Workshop Coordinator is available during open studio hours to assist in learning and to answer questions.

All Ages Open Studio: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2:30 - 4:30 pm
Adult Open Studio: Tuesdays from 4:30 - 6:30 pm

There will be trainings each Monday from 5:30 - 6:30 pm on a different piece of equipment, as follows:

Sewing (1st Monday)
Vinyl cutter/ Heat Press (2nd Monday)
Laser Cutting/ Inkscape (3rd Monday)
3D Printing/ TinkerCAD (4th Monday)

All workshops will be limited to 10 participants. Once a person completes a session successfully, they will receive a badge to be noted on their library card.

Workshop Spaces

The Workshop is composed of five different sections/areas: the Large Workshop Space, the MakerSpace, the Workshop Classroom, the Partner Offices, and the Sound Studio.

Large Workshop Space

The main multi-purpose collaborative workspace can host one large event/program or be divided into “Front” & “Back” halves for two simultaneous smaller programs.

The front half of the space has two standing-height tables with built in power outlets and seating for 10.
The back half of the space can be rearranged, based on need, with stowable tables and seating to accommodate up to 25 people.
Includes a kitchenette with a sink and refrigerator.

Workshop Makerspace

Workshop Classroom

The Workshop Classroom is equipped with a screen and is able to accommodate classes of up to 25 students.
A variety of educational programming and events for all ages are held in the classroom on a weekly basis.
The classroom is also available for non-profit organizations and educational programs to hold meetings, give presentations, and offer free educational opportunities to the public.

Workshop Partner Offices

The Workshop includes three partner offices which are available for use by PPL approved partners. The main purpose of the partner offices is to provide free educational and/or social services to the public.
To that end, PPL invites partnerships with organizations, whose missions support our desire to expand services to our community, to utilize the space in our workshop. We seek to partner with organizations that are committed to continuous improvement and collaborative, long term strategies, not just short term solutions to support the community.

Sound Studio

The newest addition to the Workshop, the PPL Sound Studio allows the community to access, and learn how to use, professional quality recording equipment and software.
Patrons who already have experience with audio recording are able to reserve a session in the Sound Studio.
If you are a beginner hoping to learn about recording and sound engineering, we also offer an introductory class utilizing affordable and accessible, consumer grade, equipment and software.
